Moore Public Schools Career Specialists held an orientation for 300 of their high school student interns at Moore Norman Technology's South Penn Campus this week, featuring sessions by district and community leaders.

MPS Superintendent Dr. Robert Romines and Assistant Superintendent of Federal Programs Jimmy Martin welcomed and encouraged the students and thanked the guests and business partners. Moore Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kim Brown spoke to students about the unique value of spending their school day in the workplace through internships. Student interns hear that many of them will step into a career environment this year that can elevate them quickly after high school graduation, making for an extraordinary senior year.

First United Bank's Chief Potential Officer Lori Fightmaster addressed how to turn the feedback students receive during their internships into opportunities for growth and gratitude, which she called having a knower mindset versus a learner mindset.

Before an on-site lunch, MPS Secondary Instructional Resource Specialist Casey Lambert emphasized to students the importance of learning to connect with new people, especially when the familiar comfort zone of school is not a part of their day. The IRT coaches quickly turned Lambert's message into an exercise to proactively rehearse meeting new people. They grouped students from all three high schools into career-path groups. In this way, interns met new peers who share similar interests and are also facing a senior year filled with opportunity and the unknown.

Through a close partnership with the Moore Chamber of Commerce, the MPS Internship Program has hundreds of willing business connections willing to testify to the importance of learning through internships. The partnership has also developed stronger community sponsors, such as Chick-fil-A of Moore and Armstrong Bank.

Moore High School Career Specialists Crystal Bonds and Krissa Cavnar, Westmoore Career Specialist Sharee Ferguson and Southmoore Career Specialist Erin Baldwin organized the event with Career Education Coordinator Rocky Dickinson. This team also handles the detailed job of connecting each student with their semester-long internship.

Businesses interested in becoming an internship site for MPS high school students can connect with either the Moore Chamber or Dickinson.
